It was a wonderful night of celebration on Saturday at the South Coast Branch Annual Awards of Excellence.
We are very proud to announce that Tom Emery has been recognised as the U14 Surf Lifesaver of the Year and Bonnie Palmer has been honoured as Masters Athlete of the Year!
These awards are incredibly well deserved and reflect Tom and Bonnie’s dedication, performance, and contribution to surf lifesaving in the 2024/25 season. Congratulations to you both!
Bonnie and Tom will now go forward as nominees in the SLSQ Awards of Excellence being held in August. Good luck Bonnie and Tom!!

It is with heavy hearts that we advise you that Life Member Dave Zemek passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
Dave was a wonderful, encouraging, dedicated, and kind member at Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC for many years. His friendship and enthusiasm for life saving will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Dave got his bronze in 1971 then joined Mermaid with his kids in 1979. He was awarded Life Membership of Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC in 2013. He was an avid swimmer, Patrol Captain and all his family, including wife Judy, patrolled at Mermaid. An accident while swimming at Miami beach left him a quadriplegic, but this never stopped him from being part of the place he loved best, the ocean. He continued to get down to the water whenever he could.
We will miss you Dave... forever in our hearts.
Dave`s family are having a celebration of Dave’s life at Calvary Catholic Church, Santa Monica Road, Miami on Thursday 17 July, 2025 at 2pm.
There will also be a paddle out next Friday 18 July at Miami Surf Club at 10am. For members attending, please wear your club cap and bring a flower to scatter.

Last Saturday @lifesavingqld hosted their 2025 Women in Lifesaving Workshop.
Female leaders, athletes, and members from across Queensland, including our very own Club Secretary Kate Lawrance, came together to share knowledge & build skills.
The team at TacMed Australia, delivered an outstanding hands-on workshop focused on managing blood loss and hypothermia - two critical areas in preventing avoidable deaths. Their training drew on the team’s real life experience in the field and was a highlight of the workshop.
It was a fantastic day for everyone involved and a great opportunity to further grow the future of women in lifesaving 💛❤️
Congratulations to Kalani Ives for receiving the Surf Sports Open Athlete of the Year at our 2024/25 Annual Awards! 🎉
Kalani joined the Club at the start of the season and rapidly demonstrated what a wonderful addition she is to our Mermaid community. Kalani is a fantastic role model for our younger members and we are so excited to see what this new season brings!
