Summer Surf Girl

Hi everyone!

My name is Monica Wilkie, and I am proud to be the 2017 Summer Surf Girl for Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC.

What is the Summer Surf Girl Program?

The Program encourages women in lifesaving to take on leadership roles in their clubs, promoting community awareness and education for surf lifesaving, while also being the largest annual fundraising initiative in Surf Lifesaving Queensland.

What does Summer Surf Girl mean for Mermaid and its community?

My “wheels in motion” campaign as our Summer Surf Girl aims to raise funds for Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC to purchase a new club bus, as well as surf safety and rescue equipment necessary to keep our beaches safe. I embark on this ten month journey with specific goals of bringing each area of the club together with a number of exciting club events including surf safety and community awareness activities, whilst encouraging participation and enjoyment.

A little about me…

When I was 9 years old, my family made the coastal move from Sydney to Port Macquarie, and it was here that I began my surf lifesaving journey. I say journey, because in my 15 years with surf lifesaving, I have been part of three different clubs in NSW and QLD, and have been involved with several aspects of surf lifesaving, from competition, to training and education, member and youth development, to currently holding officer and leadership positions in my club. I joined Mermaid in 2012, and my recent involvement has been with member development. This year, I was privileged to attend the SLSA National Leadership College as a Participant, and the UQ SLSQ Leadership Excellence Program as a Mentor.

Off the beach, I work in the Corporate & Advisory Team in a law firm in Brisbane, and am about to be admitted as a lawyer. I believe my values of work-life balance and staying true to personal passions will be a strength for my participation in the Summer Surf Girl Program this season. I am excited for what we, as a club, can achieve.

How can you get involved?

Keep an eye out on the club website, the Mermaid Memo, and follow Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC and Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC Summer Surf Girl 2017 – Monica Wilkie on Facebook and Instagram (@mermaidbeachslsc and @mermaidslscsurfgirl) for exciting events and activities that I will be organising and getting involved with this season. Hope to see you getting amongst the action!

What a weekend. So proud to be part of the Member Development Team at Mermaid SLSC. Sunday morning was a great success, having the coaches, surf sports, nippers, education, lifesaving, and member development teams together for a development morning for the U14s/15s. Great turn out. Felt very privileged to share my journey through lifesaving and help motivate the future of our club, and show them the pathway opportunities. Getting excited for the 2016/17 season. We can only go up from here!
