Round 3 of the Aussie bum series was held at Noosa on Saturday 4th February. Conditions saw offshore winds keeping the ocean nice and smooth, however there was a very tricky shore break to contend with, causing many crews to come unstuck and many boats were over turned while on their way to the finish.

Our Mermaid Motor Boaters competed in the Reserve grade division and our U23 crew, Mermaid Mermen, competed in a combined U23/Open men division (due to lack of crew numbers in both divisions).

The Motor Boaters raced below par with a 3rd and two fourths in the three race round robin and missed out on a place in the semi finals. The Mermen had mixed results from their round robin with a 1st, 3rd and 6th. However, their combined points were enough to get into the semi final. Unfortunately the 5 other boats in the semi final were all open men crews and a little too strong for our Mermen who finished 6th. But full credit goes to the U23 crew for making the semi final while competing amoungst the open mens crew.

The next Carnival for the Motor Boaters is down in Newcasle for the Australian Surf Rowers League Open. This is a large surf boat carnival attracting crews from as far as Tanum sands in Qld and some Victorian crews. Both Mermaid crews will be competing in Qld next at Perigian on Saturday 18th.

Carnivals 5th and 6th November

Round 1 of the Navy Series kicked off on the weekend at Surfers Paradise. This was also the launch for the Navy Series for Surfboats Australia wide, so it was quite a large carnival, with many clubs and crews competing from as north as Bundaberg and Tannum Sands in central Qld. The carnival was greatly supported the major sponsor, the Royal Australian Navy, with several fly overs by a couple navy helicopters and other activities involving navy personel. The carnival and other weekend events were also supported by the Surfers Paradise Business Alliance.

Our Mermaid Reserve grade crew, the Mermaid Motor Boaters, competed in this carnival and obtained very positive results, especially given it is was their first carnival with a new member in the crew. The carnival consisted of 4 race round robin format, in which each crew races 4 times to accumulate points to earn a place in the finals. In the four race round robin, Mermaid received a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, which placed them in the top 14 of more than thirty boats competing. This is a very commendable effort given the fact that the Navy series doesn't have a Reserve grade category and our Mermaid Motor Boaters were competing against many Open Mens crews. In the final the Motor Boaters finished 3rd and were less than a boat length from a 2nd placing.

So a very positive start to the season for the Motor Boaters.

Brunswick Masters Carnival 26th November, 2011

Congratulations to the Masters team of 9, who took on approximately 10 other Clubs at Brunswick Heads for the annual Masters Carnival on Saturday.

There was nowhere to hide with all 9 members taking place in surf swims, craft and beach events to take home the trophy by 8 points, over Currumbin.

The Con Asmussen Memorial Award went to Mermaid's new member John Dockray for his special swim performance in the taplin. John managed to snare a monster wave from out the back and eventually putting his team in 2nd place.

Brunswick is an excellent carnival. Congratulations to the Brunswick crew for putting on a great carnival with a strong focus on participation and fun.

Our thoughts and prayers for the family and friends of Con Asmussen who passed away in June this year. Con was the official recorder for this carnival for may years, with Life Membership at both Ballina SLSC and Helensburgh-Stanwell Park SLSC. RIP Con.
