Celebrating 100 years of Surf Lifesaving

In Memory of Vere Dowling:
About a month ago, one of our original members of the Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC passed away. Vere Dowling joined the club not long after it started, gaining his Bronze Medallion on the 11th August 1946. Vere also had the title of our 1st ever Sweep in the clubs 1st boat, known as the ILMA MARY.
Angela, Christopher and Emily Dowling are all very proud of their Pa’s involvement in the early days of the Mermaid Beach SLSC and we thank them very much for their kind donation made to our club in honor of their grandfather.

Our Clubhouse Renovations...

Week commencing 8 June...

Things are really moving along. All the plastic blinds on the balconies have now been replaced with windows or bi-folding windows and are working great. The Balconies are all pretty much finished, until the balcony extension goes in, with new paint, fans and heaters. The tiles are the last thing to go in. They have started putting up the walls for the new kid’s room, which will house the new play equipment and have also started preparing the room behind the kitchen for when the new pokies will be installed. And yes we have stairs, well the beginning of them. The member’s area down stairs has become a bit of a storage area with the kitchen already gone.

Keep watching this space for the next instalment of  Our Clubhouse Renovations.

On Saturday 9 May 2009, Mermaid Beach SLSC’s own Cinderella, aka Miss Tarra Brown, represented our Club at the 45th Conrad’s Miss Summer Surf Girl Gala Ball. Along to support this gorgeous girl in gold were 50 of her friends and family who came close to raising the roof when Tarra appeared on stage. Over the course of the season, the aim of the 16 entrants had been to raise revenue for their respective clubs as well as promoting the image of SLS to the community.   The total raised by all girls was $703633.92 which is the third highest amount in the history of the event. Tarra’s efforts with the assistance of family and friends, saw her raise a staggering figure close to $80 000 for her club.
