Handicap Surf Race 30th January 2010
The race of the season so far. Tumultuous surf although not dangerous tested the competitors weary of marathon swims in virtual flat conditions. The short course was set as a single lap swimming against the sweep to ensure that at least some of the back markers had a crack at the line. The duck sat on the southern can to confuse the front markers a number of whom failed to recognise the strength of the sweep.
If they got it right the front markers were sure to take the prize however a number lost the advantage seeing themselves swamped by the back markers on the final turn.
Surf savvy Mark Foster watched evergreen retiring teenager David Zemek pinch a wave on the final turn after grinding 15 seconds only back in the set up of the race to the first and second cans.
There were other wonderful and memorable moment like the competitive petite and polite Miss Roberts being shown that the race is not over until the race is over and a 100 kilo retired brickie and comeback king and title contender Graham (Gunner) Reid shouldered into the line up and to see the endearing and consummate qualities of retro competitors showing support for Mr Handicapper regardless of results makes you warm and fuzzy.
Today’s winner picks up top billing on the leader board and (yes I am available for coffee in the morning Damo)
